Shopify or a custom online store? How to decide
By Austin Hunter ·
If you sell products online, Shopify (or a similar hosted platform) is usually the right place to start. It handles checkout, payments, taxes, hosting and security for a monthly fee. A custom store only makes sense when your business doesn't fit the shape those platforms expect.
Shopify is usually right when
- You sell physical or digital products at fixed prices, one cart, one checkout.
- Your catalog, shipping and discounts work within the platform's settings or a well-supported app.
- You want to launch in weeks and change things yourself without a developer.
- Monthly platform and app fees are small next to what a developer would cost to maintain a custom store.
A custom build starts to make sense when
- Pricing is complex: quotes, contract or tiered pricing per customer, configure-to-order products, or dealer portals.
- Ordering is tied into your own systems (inventory, ERP, scheduling, a CRM) in ways an off-the-shelf app can't handle cleanly.
- The "store" is really a booking, membership or service workflow with a payment at the end.
- App and transaction fees have grown large enough that owning the software is cheaper over a few years.
The middle path
Most businesses don't need to choose all or nothing. Keep Shopify for the catalog and checkout, and add a small custom piece where you're different: a private app that syncs orders to your back office, a custom quote builder that creates draft orders, or a separate portal for wholesale customers. You keep the platform's reliability and only pay to build what's unique to you.
Questions to answer before you decide
- What does your checkout need to do that a standard cart can't?
- Which of your systems must the store talk to, and how often?
- What are you paying each month in platform, app and transaction fees, and how fast is that growing?
- Who will maintain a custom store after launch, and what will that cost per year?
How we help
We'll tell you honestly if Shopify plus a few well-chosen apps is enough, which it often is. When it isn't, we build the custom piece, keep it in accounts you own, and look after it on a care plan. A free call is usually enough to know which way to go.
