Deskbridge vs. scrcpy: which should you use for DeX on a Mac?
If you're comfortable in Terminal and only want the DeX desktop in a window, use scrcpy, which is free. One command gets you the real DeX. Deskbridge is built on scrcpy and costs $12 once. It's worth that if you want DeX to open on its own when you plug in, a phone screen that stays dark without freezing DeX, unlocking from your Mac, or calls, notifications and app windows on the Mac.

Where scrcpy is the better choice
- You want free and open source. scrcpy is one of the best-maintained Android tools there is, and the DeX trick is a single flag. Our scrcpy guide has the exact commands, including sharp 4K and portrait sizes.
- You already live in Terminal. A shell alias covers "open DeX", and you can tune every flag yourself (codec, bitrate, frame rate, recording).
- You're on Windows or Linux. scrcpy runs there too. Deskbridge is Mac-only.
- You don't need the phone screen off. If the phone sits on a charger, face up and awake, the main thing Deskbridge fixes doesn't bother you.
Where Deskbridge earns its $12
- The sleep problem. A sleeping Galaxy freezes its DeX display, and scrcpy's own screen-off option sends Samsung phones to sleep. So with plain scrcpy you either leave the phone screen lit or lose DeX. Deskbridge's phone helper keeps the screen black and awake, and locks the phone the moment anyone touches or unplugs it. How Secure Blackout works.
- The lock-screen problem. When the phone locks, Samsung hides the DeX dock and blocks typing. Deskbridge warns you, and lets you type your PIN on the Mac to unlock it without picking the phone up.
- Your phone on your Mac. Call banners with Answer and Decline, notifications in Notification Center, Do Not Disturb while DeX is open, and any phone app in its own window. scrcpy doesn't try to do these. They come from the small helper app Deskbridge installs on the phone.
- No Terminal at all. Plug in and DeX opens. Unplug and it closes. Nothing to remember next month.
What you give up with Deskbridge
To be fair about it:
- It costs money, and scrcpy doesn't.
- Fewer knobs. Deskbridge picks codec and bitrate for you, and doesn't expose every scrcpy flag.
- It installs a helper app on your phone (no network access; it can lock the phone, and reads notifications only if you turn that on).
- It's Mac-only, and it only works on a Galaxy with One UI 8 or later for the full DeX desktop. Other Android phones get plain screen mirroring, which scrcpy also gives you for free.
Our suggestion
Try scrcpy first if you're curious and comfortable with Homebrew. It shows you in five minutes whether DeX on your Mac is something you'll use. If it is, and the sleep and lock-screen issues start to annoy you, try Deskbridge free for 3 days. It uses the same engine, so nothing about the picture changes. You get the convenience on top.
FAQ
Is Deskbridge just scrcpy with a menu?
The video, audio and input come from scrcpy. Deskbridge bundles the official scrcpy and adb builds and drives them. What it adds is everything around that: opening DeX on plug-in, sizing, Secure Blackout and unlocking, which need its phone helper, plus calls, notifications, app windows and drag-to-share.
Can scrcpy run the real Samsung DeX?
Yes. On a Galaxy phone with One UI 8 or later, scrcpy 3.0 or newer with --new-display creates a virtual display and the phone starts the full DeX desktop on it. That's the same DeX Deskbridge shows.
Is the picture quality different?
No. Both use scrcpy's H.264/H.265 stream from the phone. Deskbridge picks a sharp size for your Mac's display, and with scrcpy you set the size and DPI yourself.
Can I keep using scrcpy after installing Deskbridge?
Yes. Deskbridge uses its own bundled copy and doesn't touch a Homebrew install. Just don't run both against the phone at the same moment.
Try both. Keep what fits.
Deskbridge is free for 3 days, then $12 once. No account, no card for the trial.
