Saint of the day
Optional
St Aidan of Lindisfarne
(d. 651) Irish monk of Iona sent to Northumbria when a harsher missionary failed — 'you were too severe,' Aidan had told him. From Lindisfarne he walked the roads, freeing slaves and giving away the king's gifts; Bede loved him above all he described.
Saint Aidan, gentle apostle of the north, pray that meekness win what severity cannot.
About Ordinary Time
Ordinary Time is the Church's ordered counting of weeks — 'ordinal', not 'ordinary' in the sense of plain. It falls in two stretches, after the Christmas season and after Pentecost, and it is where most of the Gospel is read straight through, Sunday by Sunday.
Why green?
Green is worn through Ordinary Time. It is the color of growth and of hope.
