The Immaculate Conception, December 8, 2026

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception falls on Tuesday, December 8, 2026. It is a holy day of obligation in the United States — Catholics are bound to attend Mass — and the patronal feast of the country.

The Immaculate Conception — a holy day of obligation in the United States. Most parishes add Masses, including a vigil Mass on the evening of Monday, December 7. The color is white, even in Advent.

What the Church believes

From the first instant of her existence, Mary was kept free from original sin — not by her own merit, but by a singular grace of God, given in view of what her Son would do on the cross. She was redeemed, like every Christian, but redeemed in advance, so that she could give a whole and undivided yes when the angel came. The angel's greeting already calls her the one God has favored.

Luke 1:28 (WEB)Having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, you highly favored one! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women!”

The first reading of the day goes back to the beginning, to the promise of a woman whose offspring would crush the serpent:

Genesis 3:15 (WEB)I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel.

The readings: Genesis 3:9–15, 20; Psalm 98; Ephesians 1:3–6, 11–12; Luke 1:26–38. The doctrine and the common objections, from Scripture →

The definition, 1854

Pope Pius IX defined the doctrine on December 8, 1854, in the bull Ineffabilis Deus:

LatinDeclaramus, pronuntiamus et definimus, doctrinam, quae tenet, beatissimam Virginem Mariam in primo instanti suae conceptionis fuisse singulari omnipotentis Dei gratia et privilegio, intuitu meritorum Christi Iesu Salvatoris humani generis, ab omni originalis culpae labe praeservatam immunem, esse a Deo revelatam atque idcirco ab omnibus fidelibus firmiter constanterque credendam.
Our translationWe declare, pronounce and define that the doctrine which holds that the most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instant of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God, in view of the merits of Christ Jesus the Savior of the human race, was preserved free from every stain of original sin, is revealed by God, and is therefore to be firmly and constantly believed by all the faithful.

Prayers for the day

The Miraculous Medal prayer (1830)

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

Tota pulchra es

The opening of an antiphon sung on this feast since at least the fourth century:

LatinTota pulchra es, Maria, et macula originalis non est in te.
Our translationYou are all beautiful, Mary, and the original stain is not in you.

And the Memorare, or the Hail, Holy Queen.

The novena

The Novena to the Immaculate Conception runs the nine days before the feast — in 2026, from the First Sunday of Advent, November 29, to Monday, December 7. Pray the Miraculous Medal prayer, a decade of the Rosary, and the Memorare each day. All the season's novenas →

Immaculate Conception questions

Is December 8, 2026 a holy day of obligation?

Yes. In 2026 the Immaculate Conception falls on a Tuesday, and in the United States it is a holy day of obligation on any weekday. The 1991 USCCB decree that lifts the obligation when a holy day falls on a Saturday or Monday covers only January 1, August 15 and November 1 — never December 8 or Christmas.

What happens when December 8 falls on a Sunday?

The solemnity cannot displace a Sunday of Advent, so it moves to Monday, December 9. That next happens in 2030. Check your diocese's guidance on the obligation in such a year.

Is the Immaculate Conception the same as the Virgin Birth?

No — a very common confusion. The Immaculate Conception is about Mary's own conception: from its first instant she was preserved from original sin. The Virgin Birth is about Jesus: conceived by the Holy Spirit without a human father.

Why is it the patronal feast of the United States?

In 1846 the bishops of the United States, meeting in the Sixth Provincial Council of Baltimore, chose Mary under the title of the Immaculate Conception as the nation's patroness, and Pope Pius IX approved it in 1847. The national shrine in Washington is dedicated to her under that title.

When was the Immaculate Conception defined?

Pope Pius IX defined it as dogma on December 8, 1854, in the bull Ineffabilis Deus. Four years later, at Lourdes, the Lady told St Bernadette: “I am the Immaculate Conception.”
