Optional

St Edmund the Martyr

(c. 841–869) King of East Anglia defeated by the Great Heathen Army, who refused to renounce Christ or rule as a Danish puppet. Bound to a tree, shot with arrows, and beheaded, he was England's first patron; Bury St Edmunds grew around his shrine.

Saint Edmund, king faithful in defeat, pray that we lose everything before we lose Christ.

About Ordinary Time

Ordinary Time is the Church's ordered counting of weeks — 'ordinal', not 'ordinary' in the sense of plain. It falls in two stretches, after the Christmas season and after Pentecost, and it is where most of the Gospel is read straight through, Sunday by Sunday.

Why green?

Green is worn through Ordinary Time. It is the color of growth and of hope.

Verse of the day

John 4:35
