St Ephrem the Syrian
(c. 306–373) Deacon of Nisibis and Edessa, Doctor of the Church, called the Harp of the Holy Spirit. He wrote theology as hymns — hundreds survive — and taught choirs of women to sing them; he died serving plague victims of famine-struck Edessa.
