On May 13, 1917, Mary first appeared to three Portuguese children in the Cova da Iria at Fatima. Six monthly apparitions followed, calling for prayer, penance, and the rosary. On the anniversary in 1981 Pope John Paul II survived an assassination attempt and credited her.
