(c. 401–449) Monk of Lérins made archbishop of Arles at twenty-nine, who walked his province on foot, worked the fields to earn alms, and sold the church plate to ransom captives. His zeal outran his rights and drew Pope Leo's rebuke, which he bore humbly.
