(c. 344–421) Alexandrian woman who lived in dissipation until, at Jerusalem, an unseen force barred her from the church of the Holy Sepulchre. Converted, she crossed the Jordan and spent forty-seven years alone in the desert, found at last by the monk Zosimas.
