St Porphyry of Gaza

(c. 347–420) Monk of Egypt and Palestine made bishop of Gaza, a stronghold of paganism, against his protests. He obtained the closing of the temples from the empress Eudoxia and spent his fortune on the poor until, as he wished, nothing remained.

Saint Porphyry, poor bishop of a hard city, pray that we spend ourselves entirely.
